"You are a stickler for the law. It reminds me of Les Mis and the famous person who wanted to get the person who had a sandwich," Khanna told whistleblower Gary Shapley, suggesting he is excessively committed to enforcing the law and self-righteous.

The comparison refers to the antagonist Inspector Javert, a central character in the novel Les Misérables and its musical adaptation. Javert pursues the protagonist, Jean Valjean, for breaking his parole after serving prison time for stealing a loaf of bread to feed a starving child. Javert lacks empathy for criminals and is obsessively devoted to returning Valjean to prison for the minor offense.

IRS whistleblowers Shapley and Joseph Ziegler testified before Congress Wednesday surrounding the agency's investigation into first son Hunter Biden, which they say was sabotaged by the Justice Department.

The whistleblowers allege that the DOJ shielded Hunter Biden and his father President Joe Biden from scrutiny, preventing prosecutors from filing felony charges and undermining the tax investigation.

"There were certain investigative steps that we weren't allowed to take that could have led us to President Biden," Shapley said when he came forward. "We needed to take them."

Hunter Biden agreed in June to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax crimes, a move that will likely keep him out of prison. The plea deal ended a five-year probe into Biden's taxes.

The assailant, identified by authorities as Sawyer Walden Allee, threw an unidentified liquid on the councilman, Phil Brock, and his girlfriend in an attack that was caught on video. Brock had approached the man, who was tearing down signs on a store, to request he throw away the refuse. The man then shoved Brock, shouted obscenities, stole his hat, and threw the liquid.

Allee was charged with battery and grand theft, marking his third felony arrest in less than three weeks. He had been released twice from Los Angeles County jail on felony charges days before the attack.

"I turned to walk away. He took a bottle of some sort of liquid and threw it on me," Brock told KTLA. "Made a second throw and doused Kathryn [Brock's girlfriend] as well. We called 911."

Brock, who advocates on his campaign website for more police and for the enforcement of misdemeanors, noted that Santa Monica—like other cities across the state— is struggling with a homelessness problem on its streets.

California also faces rising crime as Democratic state leaders push to ease sentencing and empty prisons.

"L.A. is finished," Rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson said earlier this month after Los Angeles county, in which Santa Monica is located, reinstated a zero-bail policy for people charged with nonviolent felonies. The city saw an 11 percent increase in its crime rate in 2022.

Homicides in San Francisco increased nearly 40 percent from 2020 to 2022 and deaths from fentanyl spiked. The city lost more than 50,000 residents last year—the highest population decrease for any major U.S. city.

Levine, a man who began publicly identifying as a woman as an adult, was asked in a Friday interview on ABC why sex-change treatments should not be reserved for adults.

"Adolescence is hard and puberty is hard," Levine said. "What if you’re going through the wrong puberty? What if you, inside, feel that you are female but now you're going through a male puberty?"

Levine claimed "there are no medical procedures done" on "prepubertal children" but, "the standard of care allows them to explore that with therapy." Puberty blockers are administered early in puberty,

"Gender-affirming care is literally suicide prevention," Levine also said, adding that red-state bans of such treatments are are "unscientific" and "medically harmful."

Levine has been a vocal critic of restrictions on youth sex-change treatments. Last year, Levine falsely insisted: "There is no argument among medical professionals ... about the value and the importance of gender-affirming care" for children.

While the Biden administration last year issued guidelines endorsing puberty-blockers and hormone replacement therapy for minors that identify as transgender, more than 20 Republican-led U.S. states have banned such treatments.

Kerry during a press conference said that while he went to China to "break new ground" on the communist nation's climate commitments, he was unable to do so. Kerry went as far as to admit that he made no demands of the Chinese, arguing that "nobody should be 'dictated to.'" He nonetheless argued that his trip was a success, as he held "very frank conversations."

"We did succeed in having long and very detailed meetings with a lot to catch up on," Kerry said. "We did have very frank conversations, but we came here to break new ground … and it is clear that we are going to need a little more work to complete that task."

Kerry's failure to return to the United States with any sort of climate agreement likely comes as an embarrassment to the Biden administration, which argued in the buildup to Kerry's trip that U.S.-China climate negotiations should not be derailed by political disagreements. During Kerry's time in Beijing, Xi poured cold water on the Biden administration's attempts at climate diplomacy—he did not meet with Kerry during the visit and on Tuesday said his nation's climate goals "will never be influenced by others."

In response to that statement, Kerry on Wednesday said he agrees that the United States should not make demands of the Chinese.

"We all agree that nobody should be 'dictated to,' and we're not doing that. That's why we had three days of intensive discussions," Kerry said. "And I think if you ask [Chinese officials] … they would tell you there was no dictation here, there was a clear exchange of ideas."

In addition to Xi's comments, the Chinese Communist Party used climate negotiations to threaten the United States during Kerry's trip. CCP-run propaganda rag Global Times on Monday warned that America must end its "crackdown" on China or risk losing "any kind of cooperation" on climate change.

"While Washington has long wanted to isolate climate change issues related to China, there is actually no way to separate bilateral cooperation on global warming from the broader context of China-U.S. relations," the state-run media outlet's editorial said.

Kerry worked to avoid angering Xi ahead of the trip. During a Thursday congressional hearing, he refused to call Xi a "dictator," saying that while Xi "wields enormous power as the leader of China," the Biden administration shouldn't get "tangled up in labels and names."

"Frankly, all of that is water off a duck's back," Kerry said.

The resolution supporting the U.S. ally passed overwhelmingly, with only nine members voting against it, all members of the Progressive Caucus.

The resolution stated that "Israel not a racist or apartheid state." It also said the United States will "always be a staunch partner and supporter of Israel."

The comments came one day before a joint session address to Congress by Israeli president Isaac Herzog, who will commemorate the 75th anniversary of Israel's founding.

Tlaib and several other progressive House members, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (Minn.) have announced they plan to boycott Herzog's Wednesday speech.

"There is no way in hell I am attending the joint session address from a President whose country has banned me and denied @RashidaTlaib the ability to see her grandma," Omar said last week.

Fellow progressive Pramila Jayapal (Wash.) has been under fire since the weekend, when she dragged Israel during a speech in Chicago.

"Can I say something as somebody who's been in the streets and participated in a lot of demonstrations?" Jayapal told the crowd. "I want you to know that we have been fighting to make it clear that Israel is a racist state, that the Palestinian people deserve self-determination and autonomy."

House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) on Monday called out House Democrats for making anti-Semitic comments and blamed the Democratic Party for not holding them accountable.

"I regret that this committee continues to hold hearings on things that do not exist, like a bogus ban on gas stoves, while ignoring the real economic and energy issues affecting people across this country," Brown said.

Brown’s claim ignores a proposed regulation and comments made by the Biden administration. A cooking appliance efficiency rule proposed by the Department of Energy in February, the department admitted, would effectively ban half of all gas stoves on the U.S. market. The Biden administration acknowledged the sweeping impact in an analysis published that month, but the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers says the proposed rule would prohibit a much larger proportion of gas stoves from being sold.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety commissioner Richard Trumka Jr., a Biden appointee, in February questioned the safety of gas stoves and said a ban was "on the table."

New York in May passed a ban on gas stoves and heating systems in new buildings by 2026, while San Francisco regulators voted in March to eliminate gas furnaces and water heaters by 2027.

Brown suggested congressional Republicans’ push to prevent the Biden administration’s ban is "part of an effort by my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to distract from the numerous wins of the Biden administration."

Jayapal made the comment at a Chicago event this weekend after being disrupted by a pro-Palestinian protester.

McCarthy called on party leadership to condemn the comments.

"Do they think Israel is an evil state?" he asked. "If they believe differently they should take action against their own for the comments coming from their leadership from within their own Democratic Party."

McCarthy referenced anti-Semitic comments made by several House Democrats, including Reps. Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), and Betty McCollum (Minn.), as evidence of pervasive anti-Semitism in the House Democratic caucus.

"These are just multiple Democrats on multiple times consistently saying anti-Semitic remarks, and it has got to stop," McCarthy said.

Jayapal's comments came ahead of a visit by Israeli president Isaac Herzog, who will deliver a joint session address to Congress to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Israel's founding.

Several progressive members of Congress have announced they will boycott the remarks, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) and Omar.

"The D.A.'s role has really no impact on crime. To create a safe community, we need to invest in alternatives to incarceration," Alameda County district attorney Pamela Price, who is facing a recall effort after just six months in office, told a local CBS outlet.

Despite claiming her position has no impact on crime, Price blamed her predecessor for "exploding crime" in the Northern California county.

"I was elected because the people in this community didn't feel safe, unfortunately," Price said. "We know that crime under my predecessor was pretty much exploding."

The CBS interviewer asked Price about families of victims who have accused her of being "unfair" in giving "excessively" lenient sentences for violent crimes. Several of Price's prosecutorial decisions have attracted controversy, including her move to give a plea deal to a teen linked to three murders that will give him just seven years in juvenile hall.

In that case, Price ignored the advice of the sheriff's office in Alameda County, which urged her to charge Sergio Morales-Jacquez, now 18 years old, as an adult because of his "extensive and violent criminal history in multiple jurisdictions."

Price was elected in November and campaigned as an "unapologetic progressive" who wants to "upend" conventions like prison sentencing. She promised to "stop over-criminalizing our youth."

A group called "Save Alameda for Everyone" recently launched to raise money and gather signatures to get Price out of office.

During the interview, Price's public relations assistant stopped the interview to press the reporter to ask about Price's achievements. "I'm sorry to interrupt. I don't think you asked about the achievements of the first six months," Price's PR head Patti Lee said.

The reporter then asked what metrics Price is using to measure her achievements, and Price admitted her office has yet to establish them.

"I think the metrics are that we're beginning to create a baseline for the data that we have," Price said. "Unfortunately, we got here and the technology is pretty much outdated and underutilized."

Price took hundreds of thousands of dollars from progressive billionaire Soros during her campaign. Soros funds prosecutors across the country who promise to push progressive ideals, including eliminating cash bail.

"How concerned are you that James Comer—the chairman of the committee—was, knowingly, unknowingly, working with, co-opted by a foreign agent?" Psaki asked Rep. Jamie Raskin (D., Md.) during her MSNBC show Inside with Jen Psaki.

Psaki was referring to Gal Luft, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen who was recently indicted by New York prosecutors for acting as an unregistered foreign agent, brokering arms deals for Chinese companies, and violating sanctions against Iran, among other charges. Republicans in the Oversight Committee under Comer's leadership had pointed to Luft as a key witness, saying he had damaging information on corruption in the Biden family.

Both Raskin and Psaki pushed unfounded allegations that former president Donald Trump colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. Raskin argued for revoking the security clearance of Jared Kushner, who was a senior adviser to then-president Trump, while Psaki tweeted in 2017 there was "a lot we know" about Trump-Russia connections.

Raskin did not answer Psaki's suggestion directly, saying instead that he is "concerned that the House Oversight Committee, which has a very proud history ... is suddenly being compromised in a really serious way. Our legitimacy is being eroded by the tactics adopted by Chairman Comer."

"Anybody who’s watched the movie Django—just watch Stephen and you see Clarence Thomas," Ellison said. "Clarence Thomas has decided that his best personal interest is siding with the powerful and the special interests regardless as to who they’re going to hurt."

In the movie Ellison referenced, Django Unchained, the antagonist character Stephen, played by Samuel L. Jackson, is a house slave who considers himself above the other slaves and is loyal to the cruel plantation owner.

Ellison has made similarly inflammatory comments before. The Minnesota attorney general in 2022 blamed the police for damage from the 2020 George Floyd riots, saying their misconduct made them responsible for the "cost of civil unrest." A law school classmate in 2017 recounted Ellison saying Jews wanted to "oppress minorities all over the world," calling them "slave traders."

Ellison and other Democrats have criticized Thomas for his recent votes on key cases before the High Court, including last month's ruling ending the use of race in college admissions. Thomas wrote a concurring opinion emphasizing the importance of "equality under the law" and seeing "individuals as individuals."

"It’s a lesson to us as African Americans," Ellison said. "What is the lesson? We all thought, ‘Well, he’s a black man raised in the deep South. He knows what racism and segregation is. He knows what affirmative action is. He’s going to come around one day. Understand that it's not a matter of pigment. It’s not what’s on your skin—it’s what’s in your mind."

Ellison said Thomas is "abdicating his responsibility" and called for him to be impeached.

"Clarence Thomas is illegitimate and has no basis in the job that he is in," Ellison said.

For example, Biden praised NATO as "the 30-second free standing, have free 30 free," whatever the hell that means. He fell down some stairs, bumbled around London with King Charles III, a.k.a. "Sausage Fingers," and took off his shirt to soak up some rays on the beach. It was disturbing.

Unusual behavior is nothing new for Biden, the oldest president in U.S. history. Reports this week revealed he frequently erupts in anger at staff, and the president often stumbles on stairs and stages.

The majority of voters worry about Biden's mental and physical health. An NBC poll last month found 68 percent of all voters worry about his condition and 55 percent said they have "major" concerns.

Biden faces the lowest support from his own party for a reelection bid in modern history. Just 38 percent of Democrats said the party should nominate Biden for reelection, compared with 57 percent who want to find someone else, according to a polling average published earlier this year.

Kerry, who was not in government at the time, held at least three secret meetings with former Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif, during which he attempted to undermine the Trump administration’s hardline policies towards Tehran. Kerry defended these powwows under questioning from Rep. Michael Waltz (R., Fla.) during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing Thursday.

"Shadow diplomacy," Kerry said, is permissible "depending on what it does. Shadow diplomacy has also saved us from a war," Kerry said, referring to back-channel discussions that helped diffuse the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

Kerry’s behavior, Waltz said, "undermined current administration diplomacy." At the time Kerry met with Zarif, then-president Donald Trump was working to kill the nuclear accord and reimpose tough sanctions on Tehran. Kerry’s meetings drew widespread scrutiny after Zarif claimed the former secretary of state passed him sensitive information about Israeli strikes in Syria.

Kerry denied disclosing that information, saying that conversation "never took place," but also claimed details about Israel’s attacks on Iranian positions were "in public circulation" at the time.

Waltz dismissed this rationale, saying, "I would posit that your shadow diplomacy now has us on the verge of Iran having a nuclear weapon."

Kerry also declined to elaborate on how he communicated with Zarif, and whether any conversations took place via encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal.

"I don’t recall how I communicated with him," Kerry said.

At the end of the segment, which included interviews with people from Nashville and Chicago about the continuing controversy surrounding Bud Light’s partnership with Mulvaney, national correspondent Ryan Young referred to Mulvaney with male pronouns.

"One bar was telling us, basically, they’re not going to serve [Bud Light]," Young said, "because they don’t like the way Dylan Mulvaney was treated after this whole controversy started."

"He of course is the transgender person they were going to sponsor and go along with, with Bud Light. They didn’t like how Bud Light didn’t stand by him after all this."

CNN anchor Kate Bolduan issued an apology the following day.

"Yesterday in a segment about transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, who was featured in Bud Light’s recent campaign, she was mistakenly referred to by the wrong pronoun and CNN aims to honor individuals’ ways of identifying themselves and we apologize for that error."

Bud Light has faced sustained backlash and boycotts after partnering with Mulvaney in early April. The brand lost its spot as America’s top-selling beer in June, with sales plummeting by over 25 percent compared to last year.

Axios reported Monday that Biden is prone to unleash his rage on "senior and lower aides alike," in contrast to his public image as a "kindly uncle."

"She’s turned on by Biden’s anger. I am too, I like it," Behar said Tuesday, in response to Fox News host Lisa Kennedy joking Monday that Biden’s reported volatility "turned me on."

"I like that, I mean, he’s such a mild-mannered sweet guy," Behar continued.

Even amid her seeming infatuation, Behar was quick to clarify her anti-racist bona fides: "He just blows off steam, his white male privilege, it’s called. Imagine if it’s a woman or a black guy doing it, not allowed."

Attractive as his foul-mouthed outbursts may be to the 80-year-old Behar, they may be another sign that Biden, also 80, is suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s, the Washington Free Beacon reported Monday.

Tapper, who was booted off prime time last year due to poor ratings, justified smearing Roberts because she had retained a former Donald Trump aide as an expert witness in her lawsuit against Biden.

"We should point out, just for the sake of fairness," Tapper said, "that [the child's] mom, who you know had the incident with Hunter … has been caught up in some far-right folks, that Ziegler guy."

Garrett Ziegler, who worked under Trump adviser Peter Navarro, has published a 600-page report on Biden's abandoned laptop. When Roberts was working with Ziegler in May, Biden's legal team appeared concerned about the former Trump aide's testimony and tried to have him disqualified as an expert, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

Biden and Roberts have since reached a settlement in the lawsuit.

President Joe Biden has refused to acknowledge Roberts's child as one of his grandchildren, leading even some liberals to criticize the president. In a New York Times column titled "It's Seven Grandkids, Mr. President," Maureen Dowd criticized the president for showing a "cold shoulder—and heart" by not acknowledging his granddaughter.

"Joe Biden's mantra has always been that 'the absolute most important thing is your family,'" Dowd wrote. "Callously scarring [his granddaughter's] life, just as it gets started, undercuts that."

Kerry, who serves on the council as President Joe Biden's special envoy for climate policy, told MSNBC on Monday that "bombs going off" in Ukraine are "exacerbating the problem" of climate change by causing "an enormous release of greenhouse gas, of methane." He went on to lament how "the loss of the gas that was coming into Europe from Russia" has caused countries to "reopen coal or keep some other form of dirty fuel available."

Kerry's comments come the week after Biden's decision to provide Ukraine with controversial cluster munitions, leading to pushback from other NATO countries and threats from Russia.

MSNBC host Ana Cabrera had asked Kerry, who was former president Barack Obama's secretary of state, to explain his assertion that the Ukraine war is worsening climate change. While Kerry said the fight in Ukraine is "enormously important," he emphasized the war's "ancillary impacts" on global warming.

The former secretary of state has made similar comments over the years. When Russia first invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Kerry lamented how the war would mean "you're going to lose people's focus" on the climate, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

"Now you are getting prepared for the forthcoming elections," Erdoğan told Biden through a translator, "and with the forthcoming elections I would like to take this opportunity to also wish you the best of luck."

"Thank you very much," Biden responded. "I look forward to meeting with you the next five years."

Erdoğan and Biden are meeting in Lithuania as part of a NATO summit, during which the Turkish president agreed to advance Sweden's bid to join the organization. After Erdoğan agreed to the move, the Biden administration announced it would send F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, as Erdoğan had requested.

Biden's embrace of Erdoğan comes as the Turkish president faces extensive criticism for his authoritarianism and anti-Semitism. He has long suppressed dissent in Turkey, cracking down on speech and arresting journalists. He has also repeatedly gone on anti-Semitic rants. Soon after Biden took office in 2021, Erdoğan declared that Israelis are "murderers" who "kill children" and are "sucking their blood," the Washington Free Beacon reported.

The two presidents have not always been so buddy-buddy. During the 2020 election, Biden called Erdoğan an "autocrat" and expressed support for Turkish opposition leaders. His administration also condemned Erdoğan's 2021 anti-Semitic remarks.

Biden has changed his tune in recent months, however. This year, for example, his State Department announced that it would bow to Erdoğan's wishes and refer to Turkey as "Türkiye."

"Maybe Maureen Dowd should find something else to write about," cohost Whoopi Goldberg said on Monday. "This is not anybody’s business."

She added that talking about Biden's family is "unnecessary" and that we "need to know not almost anything [sic]" about politicians' families.

Dowd published a piece Saturday in the New York Times calling out Biden for refusing to acknowledge he has seven grandchildren.

"The president can’t defend Hunter on all his other messes and draw the line at accepting one little girl," Dowd wrote. "You can’t punish her for something she had no choice about. The Bidens should embrace the life Hunter brought into the world."

Four-year-old Navy Joan is the daughter of Hunter Biden and his former mistress Lunden Alexis Roberts, but the first family refuses to acknowledge the child, who was proven through a paternity test to be Hunter Biden's daughter.

Aides in the White House have been told that the family has six grandchildren, not seven, according to the Times. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to comment on Biden's seventh grandchild when asked by a reporter last week whether Biden acknowledges "this little girl as his granddaughter."

Regular stops include the president’s Delaware beach house, Nantucket, Massachusetts, and Camp David, where he recently spent some time with his son, Hunter.

While Biden spends the summer hopping from one vacation spot to the next, former president Donald Trump is hot on the campaign trail, with a focus on interacting with potential voters and influencers. Trump made a surprise appearance at UFC 290 this weekend, attracting applause from and shaking hands with attendees. While at the event, the former president spoke with several high-profile cultural icons including Joe Rogan, Mark Wahlberg, Guy Fieri, and Mel Gibson.

At a campaign stop in Iowa, the first state to hold a 2024 Republican presidential primary election, Trump made an appearance at a local Dairy Queen, buying food for his supporters. At one point, Trump, a known enjoyer of fast foods, possibly jokingly asked "what the hell is a Blizzard," eliciting laughs from those around him. Going to affordable restaurants to mingle with voters appears to be a favorite of the Trump campaign, with the former president having made a number of similar visits.

While Trump appears able to dedicate significant energy to campaigning and engaging with the public, concerns have arisen regarding Biden’s physical and mental acuity. Nearly 70 percent of voters are worried that Biden may not be mentally or physically fit to serve as president. Biden’s numerous falls and verbal gaffes likely play into such uncertainty.
